John Hammerstrand, President

John A. Hammerstrand is a “Big” with a passion for giving back to the community and an advocate for the benefits of one-on-one mentoring. Professionally, he is a pilot for SkyWest Airlines and attorney at the law firm of Chihak & Martel. In addition to his flying duties at SkyWest Airlines, he also serves as a mediator and is the Vice-Chair of Professional Standards, a program that resolves crew conflicts. His professionalism and diligence have also been recognized within the legal community, having been selected a Rising Star by SuperLawyers Magazine and one of San Diego’s Best of the Bar by the San Diego Business Journal.


Andrew McGinnis, Vice-President
Business Affiliation – Farmers Insurance, Daiju Yoshino Agency

Andrew has been a Big Brother for 5 years, going on six. He has a passion to benefit the community and mentoring young people. In 2017, he joined the BBBS Ambassadors to help recruit more Bigs to become mentors. Andrew joined YPC because he realized fundraising is a major part of getting more people to sign up as Bigs.

He is a Commercial Insurance producer for Farmers Insurance.  He has achieved being in the Top 25 in the entire company in 2017 and 2018 for all producers in commercial insurance. His agency has reached President’s Council for a Farmers Insurance.  He specializes in restaurants, real estate investors, and worker’s comp insurance. When not at the office Andrew loves to travel, play beach volleyball, hike, golf, eat great food and occasionally win a dance-off at a bar or wedding.  Andrew is also a proud 1-gallon blood donor to the San Diego Blood Bank, who is the only blood bank able to donate to Rady’s Children Hospital.


Vishal Khandheria, Treasurer
Business Affiliation – Cornerstone Acquisition & Management Company LLC

Vishal is a Big Brother who has a passion for mentorship, having to benefit greatly as a mentee and seeing the difference it made in his own life. Outside of BBBS, Vishal has mentored underserved youth through digital marketing campaigns and tutored adults at the National City Public Library helping them pass their GEDs. He joined YPC to apply his skills and to continue to positively impact lives while interacting with like-minded professionals who do the same.

Vishal grew up in Rochester, MN before moving out east for his education. In 2013, he earned his B.A. in Economics from Georgetown University and then relocated to San Diego to start his career in finance. Vishal currently works as a Senior Associate at Cornerstone Acquisition & Management Company LLC, an investment firm based in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. In his spare time, Vishal loves investing, playing tennis, and trying new sushi restaurants in San Diego. He is also an avid basketball fan and has a black belt in Taekwondo.


Michelle Powers, Secretary
Business Affiliation – Powers Grewal PLC

Michelle is a new board member of YPC and is looking forward to becoming a Big Sister. She moved to San Diego in 2011 from her hometown of San Francisco, where she was honored by the CA Bar Association with the Wiley M. Manuel Award for her accomplishments providing legal aid to underprivileged families. Today, Michelle runs a thriving special education and juvenile justice law practice, Powers Grewal PLC, which advocates for the rights of children throughout the state. Michelle graduated cum laude from the University of Southern California, where she provided college mentoring for high school students in South Central Los Angeles. While receiving her Juris Doctor from Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, Louisiana, Michelle represented families seeking political asylum from conflict zones with Catholic Charities International Immigration and Refugee Services.

In her free time, Michelle enjoys adventure travel, guitar, hiking, skiing, yoga, and building her wine knowledge as a Certified Sommelier, French Wine Scholar, and Advanced Wine & Spirits Educational Trust awardee. Michelle joined YPC to continue her passion for serving the community by helping to provide educational and social enrichment opportunities to San Diego’s youth.

Andrew Wright
Business Affiliation – Atlas Construction Supply, Inc.

Andrew is a new member of YPC and became a Big Brother in 2017. He was born and raised in San Diego, which drives him, even more, to do whatever possible to help better the local community. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona in 2012 and Masters of Business Administration from Point Loma Nazarene University in 2016. Andrew is a Partner and current Vice President at Atlas Construction Supply, Inc. which does work both in the U.S. and Latin America.

In his spare time, Andrew enjoys spending time with family in San Diego, Potrero, and Mexico, and also enjoys traveling and experiencing new places and people to hopefully make positive and lasting connections. He is very eager to do whatever possible to assist the youth in his hometown, which he feels so grateful to call home.


Christie Cole

Christie is originally from Connecticut and graduated from Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, NH with a degree in Communications and Sports Management degree. Before moving to San Diego, she worked for a professional tennis tournament. Currently, she works with a lacrosse company that runs lacrosse programs and events in Orange County and various cities across the country. She’s responsible for the marketing and planning of its programs. She joined YPC because she wanted to get involved with the community and meet other young professionals in the area. She loves that everyone is so friendly and enthusiastic about the community and the events the committee hosts to help BBBS.

Christie loves to travel and explore new places. Moving to California was always a goal of hers, and San Diego is a great fit because she’s met awesome people that share her love for sports and travel. She’s always up for new adventures and a huge Patriots fan!
