Name: Tim Cruickshank
Position: VP Finance
Tenure on BBBS Board: 2-3 years
- Who served as a mentor to you growing up?
My siblings – I’m the youngest of four, and I was always trying to keep up with them. They used the perfect combination of love/affirmation to make me feel supported, mixed with lots of teasing/goading to keep me honest.
- What’s your favorite BBBS event and why?
Golf Marathon – it’s a truly grass roots effort. 1,000+ donors usually donating $20-$100 to get to $160k-$200k. I don’t care for charity events where a high percentage of the fundraising goes to costs and overhead, so I’m very proud that over ~90% of the funds raised go directly to BBBS, and ultimately to matching kids with mentors.
- Why should someone become a Big?
1-to-1 Mentoring = 2 Changed Lives. Being a Big Brother was a profound experience. It is first and foremost about the children, but I guarantee Bigs are impacted as well. Being a consistent presence in someone’s life requires accountability, and in providing that, I’m confident Bigs feel a tremendous sense of pride and gratitude.
- If you could have ice cream with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and what flavor would you order?
My wife – ice cream is her absolute favorite thing, and she’d kill me if I didn’t invite her. I’d have coffee ice cream, and she’d have chocolate. It would have to be at The Ice Cream Bar on Cole Street in San Francisco.
- If you could give your 20-year-old self advice, what would you tell him/her?
You’re not going to accomplish your goals overnight. It takes hard, steady work mixed with opportunity. Sometimes things go your way and you see results quickly, but more often than not, goals take longer than planned to achieve. Make sure that whatever you put your time into, you would be willing to do it for 1, 2, 5, 10 years.
