Little Brother On the Right Path

sonyDavid had watched his own siblings entering Juvenile Delinquent centers and getting in trouble often. David could have followed that path, but because his Big Brother helped him believe he could be different, he believed it to.  David improved his grades, stayed out of trouble and chose to avoid the people and situations that were negatively influencing his life. Big Brothers Big Sisters Match Support Specialist said, “Sonny has honestly helped save him.” “He makes these decisions on his own,” said Sonny proudly. “I cannot be around all the time, so but I believe in David and know he can do things on his own and succeed.” Sonny’s confidence in David has been an encouragement to him and inspired him to strive for success. David is now planning on joining the Navy (just like his Big Brother Sonny) when he graduates high school next year. Sonny has helped David talk to recruiters and is “training him” by hiking and keeping him active. Sonny also taught David to swim, tread water, and hold his breath so that he can be in the same specialty in the Navy as Sonny. As Sonny puts it, “The bottom line is that I am very proud of the man David is becoming. I feel blessed to be part of his life and am thankful I have the opportunity to help and mentor David as he becomes a man.” In his nomination of Sonny for the 2012 Sports Bigs Big Brother of the year, David wrote, “He’s always telling me not to give up. I like it when he says that, because I hate the words “give up”; it’s something I will not do. Ever since Sonny has been my Big Brother I can picture my past and know that I’ve changed during the years because of him. I’m not that bad boy I used to be. I’m a kid that has Sonny no matter what. I can go to him for anything. So I consider Sonny as family.” David’s mother added, “Sonny has had a big impact on our lives. It has been a pleasure and a blessing to have met Sonny, and to have him be a part of David’s life.”
