A Relationship of Trust
A shared love for the creative, fuels a friendship. Sarah and her mother came to Big Brothers Big Sisters to find a caring Big Sister, after the passing of Sarah’s father just one year earlier. Sarah was somewhat reserved when she met Staci, but they quickly found that making crafts together was one of their favorite things to do. They used this creative time to get to know each other better, and as Sarah opened up, the relationship grew. Staci and Sarah both share a love for the holidays, and spent many outings making beautiful and colorful Christmas ornaments. Inspired by their creation, Little Sister Sarah made a pillow for her mother as a 2010 Christmas gift. The Match recently began attending craft fairs together to inspire new craft ideas. These outings have helped Sarah feel more comfortable sharing what’s on her mind with her Big Sisters while doing an activity they both love. “My Big Sister has helped me to not be as shy,” shared Sarah. Sarah has someone to talk to and open up with, and this has been significant in helping her cope with the loss of her father. Two years later, Sarah is now 16, and her Big Sister has seen Sarah grow and mature. “To me, the most important thing is that Sarah is happy,” said Staci. “I enjoy our chats and hearing her share about friends and school updates.” This Christmas they are planning to do another holiday craft together. A few years from now, they will look back and see all they made together is not simply holiday décor, but lifelong memories that represent the unique friendship they share. Having someone share a passion with you, build confidence in you as you create something your proud of, and simply enjoy spending time with you. These are the simple gifts a mentor can give a child that create lifelong benefits to a child who receives them. It’s in these moments shared together that add up to a relationship of trust and love.
