Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County Announces Tom Seidler of the San Diego Padres as 2018 Person of the Year

SAN DIEGO, CA – March 13, 2018 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County (BBBS of SDC), the leader in providing one-to-one mentoring for children facing adversity, announced today that Tom Seidler, Senior Vice President of Community & Military Affairs, The San Diego Padres, has been selected as the “2018 Person of the Year.” Seidler will receive his award at Big Brothers Big Sisters 56th Annual Gourmet Dinner on October 18, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine.

“I’m a big believer in the positive, sometimes life-changing impact that Big Brothers Big Sisters has on the youth of San Diego,” Seidler said.  “It’s an organization I’m happy to support personally and through the Padres.  It’s a wonderful honor to be recognized as Person of the Year.”

Seidler is a consistent and devoted supporter of the organization. He has served on the BBBS of SDC Board of Directors for more than four years, helping to develop a strong partnership between BBBS of SDC and the San Diego Padres and creating outreach and volunteer recruitment opportunities. BBBS of SDC volunteers and children have been the recipients of the Padres generosity, including their annual ticket program, softball clinic for Little Sisters and Padres-sponsored events such as “Holiday by the Bay”, a skating event for “Operation Bigs” (A BBBS military mentoring program).

In June of 2017, the Padres served as the Platinum Sponsors for the Big Brothers Big Sisters National Conference, during which they hosted 800 BBBS national staff for an evening game and the official launch of the local affiliate’s “Bigs in Badges” program. This program connects law enforcement officers with children in the communities they serve. This partnership is strongly supported by former Chief Shelley Zimmerman, who will also be recognized at the October 18th gala with BBBS of SDC’s Community Champion Award.

Seidler is a longtime baseball executive from a three-generation baseball family and an active member of the San Diego community.  In addition to his Board service with BBBS of SDC, he also sits on the Board of Directors of the Downtown San Diego Partnership, Padres Pedal the Cause, and the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. Seidler is also a member of the Athletics Committee of the Board of Trustees of the University of San Diego.

In 2015, Seidler oversaw the development and launch of the Padres Volunteer Team, a regional volunteer force created to give back to the greater San Diego area. In three years, the Padres Volunteer Team has engaged over 4,600 members of the community and provided over 20,000 volunteer hours and over $750,000 of value to local non-profits, including BBBS of SDC.

Wayne Kay, President and CEO of BBBS of SDC said, “Tom’s recognition as ‘Person of the Year’ is well deserved. He has connected the organization to countless opportunities and continues to serve as a fierce advocate for Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County.”
